KBC English Service

KBC English Service is the national English-language radio channel of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, the state-owned public broadcaster. Listeners in Nairobi have found it on 95.6 FM, and it carries news, current affairs and general programmes for a countrywide audience.

KBC is a state corporation, and its founding law is the KBC Act, listed as Cap 221. That law tells it to broadcast information, education and entertainment independently and impartially, in English, Kiswahili and whatever other languages it decides to use. On radio, the English Service covers the English side of that brief, while Radio Taifa, on 92.9 FM in Nairobi, does the same in Kiswahili.

The corporation says it wants to be the broadcaster Kenyans trust most for reliable information. Among its stated aims are helping the public understand government development policy and using radio and television to support national development. That gives the English Service a more formal, public-service tone than most commercial FM stations.

KBC also runs regional services in local languages, including the Kikuyu station Coro FM, alongside its television channels.
