KBC Radio Taifa is the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation's national Swahili service, for listeners across the country who want news, public information and entertainment in Kiswahili. Nairobi listeners find it at 92.9 FM.
It is one of the longest-running services on Kenyan radio. It dates back to 1953, when African Broadcasting Services started programmes for African listeners in Kiswahili and other languages. Radio itself had come to Kenya in 1924. At independence in 1964 the broadcaster became the Voice of Kenya, and it went back to the KBC name in 1989.
Generations of listeners grew up on Radio Taifa voices. The best known was Leonard Mambo Mbotela, whose long-running programme Je, Huu Ni Ungwana? aired on the service. He died in February 2025.
Under President Moi, many Kenyans regarded KBC as the government's voice. Its coverage became more even-handed in the Kibaki years, and from the early 2000s private stations took ratings from it. The corporation was created by an Act of Parliament, Cap 221, and is headquartered on Harry Thuku Road in Nairobi.
