Mwatu FM is the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation's Kikamba station, made for Kamba-speaking listeners in Makueni and the wider Ukambani area. It carries news, public information, music and community programming in Kikamba.
The station dates from 2012. It was part of a wave of vernacular services the public broadcaster opened in 2011 and 2012, which also produced Kitwek FM for Kalenjin listeners, Minto FM for Ekegusii, Mwago FM for Kimeru, Nosim FM for Maa, Mayienga FM for Dholuo and Ingo FM for Luhya. KBC built these stations to win back regional audiences that had moved to private vernacular radio during the 2000s.
In Ukambani, Mwatu FM goes up against private Kamba broadcasters, including Royal Media Services' Musyi FM. What sets it apart is the public service content and national news that come with the KBC network, delivered in Kikamba rather than in English or Kiswahili.
KBC is a state corporation established by an Act of Parliament (Cap 221), with its head office on Harry Thuku Road in Nairobi. Nationally it also runs Radio Taifa, the English Service and KBC Channel 1. We have not been able to confirm Mwatu FM's current presenters or programme names, so none are listed here.
KBC gives Mwatu FM's frequency as 93.1 FM in Makueni. You can also stream the station live on this page.
