Radio Mtaani

Radio Mtaani is a community station in Nairobi. It appears to be Mtaani Radio, a small station in the Dagoretti area that broadcasts in Kiswahili and Sheng for young people in the city's informal settlements.

In 2016 it was a 100-watt community station founded by Kelvin Nyangweso, staffed largely by volunteer journalists from the neighbourhood and funded by donors. Its first transmitter was donated by UNESCO. Mtaani means neighbourhood or 'the hood' in Sheng and Kiswahili, and the station's aim was to give residents a voice and local news that the big commercial stations rarely carry.

Mtaani Radio has been on 99.9 FM, a frequency shared in Nairobi by several low-power community and campus stations in different parts of the city.

There are limits to what we can confirm. Most of what is known dates from 2016, and the station's current status is unconfirmed. We also cannot be sure that Radio Mtaani and Mtaani Radio are the same station, so we have not listed any presenters or shows.

If you know the station, tell us whether it is still broadcasting and on which frequency. If you are in Dagoretti, try 99.9 FM. Anywhere else, the stream on this page is the simplest way to check whether Radio Mtaani is live.
