Live page

Ruben FM is a community radio station in Mukuru kwa Ruben, a large informal settlement in Nairobi, and it exists to give Mukuru residents a voice on the issues that shape their lives. The Ruben Centre runs it and holds the community FM licence, which the Communications Authority of Kenya register shows as granted on 4 February 2022 with a ten-year term.

The station grew out of a much older institution. In 1986 Sr Mary Killeen, a Sister of Mercy, started the Ruben Centre as a school for the settlement's children. The African Education Fund, a Japanese organisation, later took it over and added its first clinic, and the Christian Brothers arrived in 2000. Today the centre is a charitable trust with a Christian ethos, under the Christian Brothers African Province.

Its scale explains why a radio station makes sense there. The centre runs 29 programmes across health care, schooling, livelihoods and advocacy, and more than 3,500 pupils are enrolled in its school. Ruben FM sits within the advocacy and networking work, putting local social and community concerns on air.

The Ruben Centre website links to a live stream and shows presenter Denson Moruri in the studio. We have not found a full schedule. Its frequency is reported as 99.9 FM, though we have not been able to check this against the regulator.

The simplest way to listen is the stream on this page, which works anywhere in Nairobi or abroad. The centre's own website, rubencentre.org, also carries a live link.
