Star FM is a privately owned Somali-language news and current affairs station, regarded as Kenya's oldest Somali broadcaster, with an audience across North Eastern Kenya, Nairobi and Somalia. It has been on air since 2005. Programmes go out in Somali, with English and Swahili also used, and the schedule covers news, politics, business, sport, entertainment and humanitarian information.
The station is headquartered in Nairobi and runs transmitters across the north-east, including Garissa, Dadaab, Wajir, Madogo and Mandera, as well as stations inside Somalia. In Garissa it is on 97.1 FM, where it is among the town's most popular stations.
International content is a big part of what makes Star FM distinctive. It relays programmes from the BBC Somali Service and VOA Somali, and carries Radio Ergo's humanitarian programming. For pastoralist and refugee communities, that mix of local news, drought updates and world news in Somali is hard to find elsewhere on FM.
The Communications Authority of Kenya register lists the Star FM licence under North Eastern Media and Telecommunications Ltd, the same company behind Star TV. A Nairobi frequency of 105.9 FM is sometimes given for the station, but it is unconfirmed, so it is not shown here. We also have not found a current presenter list for 2026.
