Pwani FM on 104.7 FM
Pwani FM is the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation's Swahili station for the Coast, made for listeners from Mombasa up to Malindi.
KBC started Pwani FM in 2001. It was the second of KBC's regional FM stations, after the Kikuyu station Coro FM went on air in December 2000. Public broadcasting at the Coast is far older than that. In 1954 a regional service called Sauti ya Mvita began broadcasting from Mombasa.
On the coastal dial Pwani FM is up against private broadcasters, among them Royal Media Services' Bahari FM. What it brings is the backing of the national broadcaster, with access to KBC's newsroom and public service content. For many coastal listeners it is also the place to hear national announcements in their own variety of Kiswahili.
