Maji Maji

Maji Maji is the lead host of Brekko, the weekday breakfast show on Ghetto Radio 89.5 FM in Nairobi, and he also runs the station as its chief executive. Ghetto Radio names him, under his real name Julius Ondijo Owino, as both host and CEO. That is a double role few Kenyan breakfast presenters carry. In October 2026 the station was still promoting Brekko with Maji Maji and King Kafu on the microphone.

Most Kenyans first knew him as one half of Gidi Gidi Maji Maji, the Nairobi hip hop duo he formed with Joseph Ogidi. The pair rapped mainly in Luo, mixed with English and Swahili, and leaned on African rhythms more than most of their peers. Their debut album, Ismarwa, came out in June 2000 with Tedd Josiah producing. Two years later Unbwogable became their biggest hit and was taken up by Mwai Kibaki's campaign as its anthem. The duo then signed with South Africa's Gallo Record Company, released Many Faces in 2003 and won two Kisima Music Awards that year, including best group.

Brekko is built for Ghetto Radio's young, Sheng speaking audience. The four hours mix hourly news, website and newspaper reviews, morning quotes, a prank call segment called Rauka and a current affairs trivia feature. A hit or miss segment debuts new Kenyan urban songs, and the station credits Maji Maji's own taste for the morning playlist.

His old partner Gidi now co-hosts the breakfast show on Radio Jambo, so both halves of the duo are on Nairobi breakfast radio at the same hour, on rival stations.
