Classic 105 is Radio Africa Group's English-language station for working adults, built around older hits, phone-ins and relationship talk. In Nairobi it broadcasts on 105.2 FM, alongside sister stations Kiss 100 and Radio Jambo.
Most listeners know it for one programme, the weekday breakfast hosted by Maina Kageni and his co-host, billed as Maina and King'ang'i in the Morning. Kageni co-presents with comedian Daniel Ndambuki, better known as Churchill, who appears on air in character as Mwalimu King'ang'i. The show runs on humour, call-ins and advice about love and marriage, in a mix of English and Kiswahili.
By 2016 Radio Africa had chosen to put Classic 105 at the centre of its plans, because the people who grew up on Kiss 100 were now older. The breakfast show was pitched at urban workers. Kageni's call-in style and his choice of older songs won him a big following, particularly among women, though some conservative listeners objected to the content.
Presenters have come and gone. Nick Odhiambo was with the station for around a decade before leaving for Radio Maisha in 2017. In December 2021 Kageni told listeners he meant to quit radio the following year and set up a business in the US, yet he was still on air and central to Radio Africa's ratings in 2024.
On numbers, Classic 105 ranked second nationally for January to July 2024 with 4.62 per cent of listeners, behind Radio Jambo, and second on advertising share with 6.99 per cent. Tune to 105.2 FM in Nairobi or stream Classic 105 here.
