Mvita FM on 106.2 FM

Mvita FM is a community and training radio station in Mombasa, run by the media section of Kenya Coast National Polytechnic and broadcasting on 106.2 FM.

The station started broadcasting in May 2018, according to the polytechnic. It was set up with funding from Mvita Constituency, so it doubles as a community station for constituents and a practical classroom for the polytechnic's media students.

Its programme mix includes talk, music and sport, plus cultural shows built around two of the Coast's signature sounds. Taarab, the sung poetry of the Swahili coast, and bango, Mombasa's own brand of dance band music, both have a place on the schedule. Programme titles are in Kiswahili, which points to Kiswahili as the main broadcast language, though the polytechnic does not state that outright.

Jac FM on 106.2 FM

JAC FM is a community-owned station in Kwale County, set up by the Jamii Action Centre as a voice for the Mijikenda community.

What sets JAC FM apart is how it is made. A volunteer team produces the programmes, and the subjects reflect the centre's community work: peacebuilding, climate resilience, gender equity and civic issues. It is seen as an example of community radio amplifying Indigenous voices in Kwale.

Language is central to that. Broadcasting in Mijikenda dialects, and not only in Swahili, means listeners hear local issues discussed in the language they use at home. The station is a platform the community itself controls, rather than one run for it from outside.
