Mulembe FM

Mulembe FM is the Luhya-language station from Royal Media Services, aimed at the Luhya people of western Kenya and those living in Nairobi and the Rift. Nairobi listeners find it on 97.9 FM, western Kenya on either 99.2 FM or 99.0 FM, and Eldoret on 95.8 FM.

The station calls its audience the Mulembe Nation, a nod to the Luhya greeting and to the many sub-groups that make up the community. Its motto is 'Omwoyo kwa Baluhya'. Royal Media says Mulembe has been broadcasting for close to twenty years, with a schedule that blends news and talk with Luhya cultural programmes and plenty of music.

Weekdays open at 4am with Tsikhabi Mumabwibwi, an inspirational show, before Bukha Bushiere takes over the 6am to 10am breakfast slot with current affairs. Mid-morning belongs to Tinyirira, which means 'work hard', then come the youth show Mulembe Baze and Kalakala on the evening drive.

Weekends are a good time for music fans. Witole plays lingala, Lipala is built around isukuti and traditional sounds, Etsiafuma focuses on Luhya music, and Rhumba Africa needs no explanation. Sport gets its own slot in Emibayo Extra.

Royal Media later added dialect stations of its own, Vuuka FM for Maragoli speakers and Sulwe FM for the Bukusu. Mulembe remains the station for the Luhya community as a whole. Tune in on the frequencies above, or stream it on this page or the Citizen Radio app.
