Gatonye wa Mbugua

Gatonye wa Mbugua is the Head of Radio at Kameme FM and the main voice of Arahuka, the Mediamax station's Kikuyu breakfast show on 101.1 FM in Nairobi. Arahuka runs on weekday mornings from 6am to 10am, and listeners know it for his newspaper reviews, political analysis and phone-in debate.

He did not start out in radio. After his studies he acted at the Kenya National Theatre, and his best-known film, The Race, came out in 2008. Kameme hired him in 2007 to read business news, and a senior manager later pushed for him to get a presenting slot even though the colleague who auditioned him did not rate his voice. He went on air as a presenter in 2008.

His profile grew on Ma-Watchmen, the late-night show he co-hosted with Muthee Kiengei and the comedian Kihenjo. In 2016 he took over Arahuka after Njogu wa Njoroge left the station, and he later combined presenting with running Kameme's radio operation. Kiengei, his long-time partner on the breakfast show, announced in October 2026 that he was leaving for Inooro FM.

The awards have followed. Gatonye was named Best Vernacular Radio Presenter in 2018 and 2019, was Male Presenter of the Year at the 2025 Starbrands East Africa Awards, and holds a Head of State Commendation. Arahuka regularly ranks among the most listened-to morning programmes in the country, and its audience is estimated at about 1.9 million.
