Radio Citizen is the Kiswahili flagship of Royal Media Services, a national station for families across Kenya that mixes news, talk, sport and music. In Nairobi you find it on 106.7 FM, and it is relayed to towns and villages around the country.
The station first went on air in 1999. Over the following decade Royal Media, under chairman S.K. Macharia, used it as the base for a wide regional network, adding new stations year after year and targeting rural audiences ahead of the capital. That network now includes Inooro FM, Ramogi FM, Mulembe FM, Musyi FM, Chamgei FM, Egesa FM, Bahari FM and Hot 96, with Citizen TV as the television sister.
Royal Media aims Radio Citizen at every age group, from pupils to pensioners. Between the bulletins you get discussion of everyday national questions: health, school fees and education, the economy, farming and the environment.
A weekday begins early. Pambazuka runs from 4am to 6am, then the Jambo Kenya breakfast magazine takes over until 10am. Bensu, Q-tee and DJ Ronixx host Waks Tiki Taka later in the day, followed by Mambo Mseto in the afternoon, the evening Drive On and the late Good Evening Kenya. On weekends Fred Obachi Machoka presents Roga Roga, Michezo na Burudani covers sport, and Selly Kadot Amutabi hosts the gospel chart show Wingu la Baraka.
The line-up has shifted over the years. In August 2018 Joyce Gituro and other presenters crossed to Milele FM, and Vincent Ateya joined Inspector Mwala on Jambo Kenya. To listen, tune to 106.7 FM in Nairobi, use the Radio Citizen stream on Citizen Digital, or press play on this page.
