Baraka FM on 95.5 FM

Baraka FM is a Mombasa radio station broadcasting in Swahili on 95.5 FM, with a second transmitter in Malindi. It plays urban contemporary music, R&B and African pop alongside talk shows for coastal listeners.

The station was founded in 2000. Its name means blessing, and it began as a Christian station. That history became a legal fight in 2017, when a group of Mombasa pastors went to court over the station's move away from religious programming towards secular content. The dispute became a court row between Baraka FM's founders.

Today the music sets the tone. The station mixes international R&B and urban hits with East African and wider African pop, and fills the gaps with talk in Kiswahili. That puts it in direct competition with Mombasa's other music and talk stations rather than with the Christian broadcasters it started among.

Radio 47 on 95.5 FM

Radio 47 is a national urban Swahili station owned by Cape Media Limited, the company that also runs TV47.

The station went live on Monday 13 March 2023. Before launch it hired heavily from rivals, chiefly Radio Maisha and Milele FM. The opening line-up published that month named Eva Mwalili (Mama Taifa) on the early Nuru 47, Emmanuel Mwashumbe and Mkamburi Chigogo on Breakfast 47, Mwanaisha Chidzuga on mid-morning Mchikicho, Manucho the Young Turk on Baze 47 and Billy Miya with Mbaruk Mwalimu on the Maskani drive show. Dr Ofweneke took the evening Chemba Show.

Breakfast 47 changed in August 2023, when Alex Mwakideu left Milele FM and joined Mwashumbe on the 6am to 10am slot. Weekend programming at launch included Bahari la Elimu for students and teachers, Mikiki ya Spoti, Kali za Kale with Eric Wambugu and the political talk show Kikao cha Hoja.
